Christina School District Students Will Eat For Free This Year
With many families struggling to make ends meet, the Christina School District is making sure for the second year in a row that no student will go hungry.
School Lunch Program
Exceeding the expectation of the federal free and reduced school lunch program, Christina School District will offer free breakfast and lunch to every one.
More than 13,000 students are enrolled in the district and not one of them will have to worry about where 2 of their 3 recommended daily meals will come from.
Typically, students can qualify for free or reduced-price meals based on their family’s income. However, if at least 40 percent of students qualify, the school can receive additional funding to feed every single student.
The pandemic brought a lot of this on and the funding has since expired.
As the new school year approaches, parents and caregivers will begin planning healthy and safe meals for their children. USDA reminds all families that a healthy meal does not just stop at nutritious foods; it also includes safe food handling. https://t.co/hmnQPx6HyS pic.twitter.com/ywiRhpRhRZ

Christina School District Cares
Regardless, Christina School District joined a number of other districts around the country in continuing the universal free meal program on its own.
This year, the program will cost approximately $300,000 to provide meals to students.
It was a group effort. The school board unanimously approved offering universal free meals again for the upcoming school year.
