Cicadas Living Underground For 17 Years Emerge This Summer
One thing you don’t usually miss from summertime are the cicadas. This summer scientists say a brood of periodical cicadas that have lived underground for the past 17 years will emerge in the US. They are called “Brood X” or the “Big Brood”, they will likely first emerge in the South before making their way to the East Coast.
According to FoxNews.com, there will be around 15 US states that will likely see the cicadas as temperatures increase. Of course, Delaware is on the list. Along with Maryland, Virginia, West Virginia, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Michigan, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Georgia, and Tennessee. They are expect in massive numbers, we could see as many as 1.5 million cicadas per acre.
Cicadas haven’t hit the US in massive numbers like this since 2004. Luckily they generally only live about 2-4 weeks, typically dying after mating.
