New Trend: Stapling Bread to Trees
Throughout the years, we’ve seen some of the most odd and unexpected trends and fads surface – “planking” in 2011, clowns terrorizing people on the streets in 2016, and today, I have learned about one of the newest trends of 2019 – stapling bread to trees.
You’ve probably never thought about stapling a slice of bread to anything, but that’s why we have social media.
The trend is spreading out across the globe (it’s popular Australia right now). This trend seems to have started on Reddit’s “Bread Stapled to Trees” forum, where users share their photos of exactly what you’re thinking – bread stapled to trees.
Many users have shared photos of their “weird grain bread on birch” or “whole wheat on oak,” among literally hundreds of other examples. Users tend to go into extreme detail about the bread they’re using and species of tree.
Weird thing is, the Reddit page actually began in 2017. So it was a long process to get this going, but they were determined.
Okay it keeps getting weirder…
On this Reddit group, there are 3 primary rules: (1) Don’t post non-bread, (2) Don’t post non-stapled bread, and (3) Don’t staple it to non-trees. While this sounds like a bad punchline to a joke that only few people would understand, the Reddit group has 212,000 users and rising.
So you may be wondering why people are partaking in such a ridiculous act. Valid question. A Reddit user wrote about the phenomenon in a separate thread, explaining, “There isn’t a point to it, people do it because it is random and weird, and for the fun of doing something so ridiculous and pointless.”
There simply isn’t a reasoning behind this fad – its just something that’s happening around the world. However, one participant has said there is slightly more to it than that.
“I found a surprising amount of pride and identity in something as simple as stapling sliced bread to a worthy tree,” Reddit user TheSouthPawScrub told Fox News. “It felt good being a part of something bigger than myself, which was part of the allure to joining the fun.”
It seems that many users are following this trend to try and be a part of whatever this maybe. As strange as it may sound, stapling these pieces of bread to various trees is making people feel included in a group since everyone is sharing their photos online.
This trend has also inspired creativity with users posting stapled pizza slices and bagels as well. It also has built a community of support and encouragement, with users replying to other photos saying “Dude you can’t get any more classic than that. This staple is perfect in my eyes.”
Although there is lots of support in this Reddit group, there’s been lines drawn as well, with one post discouraging users from breading certain trees because “the staple can actually cause damage and kill the tree.”
While some may be worried for the health of trees, like all trends and fads, this will eventually end and become a distant memory. But for now, enjoy this montage of photos of bread stapled to beautiful trees.
