Delaware Ice Cream Shop Named the Best by Reader’s Digest
Summer is the perfect time to get your ice cream on. Actually, ice cream is delicious any time of the year, but when it gets hot outside, of course it feels good to lick some cold, creamy ice cream. One Delaware ice cream shop has been named one of the best in America by the tasting experts at Reader’s Digest. So, if you’re looking to get some extra delicious ice cream this season, take note.
Delaware Ice Cream Praised by Reader’s Digest
The experts at Reader’s Digest have a new feature out about the best ice cream shops in America. In the story, they note just a few reasons why ice cream is such a perfect dessert. “What other sweet treat appears at all your birthday parties and helps you through every breakup?” they write. “What other food will cool you down when it’s 90 degrees outside, or stop a hot slice of pie from burning your tongue?” I just think ice cream tastes good, so that’s enough for me. It’s also good for a breakup. Just saying.
Before we get to Reader’s Digest’s pick for the best ice cream shop in Delaware, let’s look at the state’s most popular ice cream flavor. According to a new feature in Taste of Home magazine, Delaware residents love mint chip. Good choice. “For the last three years and running, mint chip has been Delaware’s fave, based on how often Delaware folks tweet about it,” their experts write, adding that, “mint and chocolate is an iconic combo.”
So, which Delaware ice cream shop has been named the best in the state and one of the best in the country by Reader’s Digest? It’s UDairy Creamery. One thing that makes this ice cream shop extra special is that University of Delaware students manage and run the shop. Also, the ice cream base, according to Reader’s Digest, is processed in New Jersey, and it’s from milk that’s actually from the University of Delaware cows. “The base is then shipped back and flavored, frozen, and packaged by UD students at the creamery’s storefront location in Newark,” Reader’s Digest states. “Some flavors brim with school pride, like Blue Hen Tracks (vanilla ice cream with mini peanut butter cups, fudge swirl, and blue and yellow sprinkles), while others are a little more out of the box, like Zest Fest (orange zest—infused ice cream with cashews and chocolate chunks). That sounds fun and delicious. My university, Michigan State University, also has an ice cream shop that has school pride flavors. I’m happy to see this Delaware spot getting some love.
