Delaware Native Godwin Signs $66M Deal with Buccaneers, Says No to Bigger Offers
Star receiver Chris Godwin stayed with Tampa Bay, signing a $66 million deal over three years. He passed up an extra $20 million from other NFL teams. The deal locks in his full pay through 2026.
“From my understanding, Chris Godwin left about $20M on the table. I know New England was in on him pretty heavy. . .he clearly liked where he was in Tampa Bay,” said NFL Insider Ian Rapoport to The Pat McAfee Show.
New England pushed hard with the biggest offer, but the talented receiver decided to stay put. Their strong pitch wasn’t enough despite the extra money.
By keeping Godwin, Tampa Bay’s passing game remains potent. He joins Mike Evans and Jalen McMillan in a stacked receiver group, giving Baker Mayfield plenty of targets.
The move keeps things steady. After picking Godwin in 2017’s third round, he helped win a Super Bowl LV title. His value went well beyond the numbers.
Teams lined up to grab the free agent star. His reliability and playmaking skills made him a hot target.
Bringing back Godwin shows Tampa means business – they’re sticking with what works. The team is building on last year’s success.
This deal works for both sides while keeping a top player. Smart planning helps the Bucs spread out the salary cap hit over time.
With this key player back on board, Tampa Bay can look ahead to 2024. The coaches now have all their receivers ready to go.
