Philadelphia Names Street to Honor Hometown Star
The Philadelphia City Council has voted to rename the 2000 block of North 56th Street to “Will Smith Way.”
The street runs past Overbrook High School, where Will Smith got his start before rising to fame. The dedication recognizes his influence in Hollywood and his Philadelphia beginnings.
“The City of Philadelphia has benefited from Will Smith’s continued success, which has brought global attention to the City and its vibrant cultural scene,” the resolution reads.
After graduating from Overbrook, the Philadelphia native partnered with DJ Jazzy Jeff, making a name for himself in hip-hop. His success in music paved the way for his breakthrough role on “The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air.”
Over thirty years in Hollywood, Smith has starred in blockbusters like “Independence Day” and “Men in Black.” His portrayal of Muhammad Ali earned him Oscar recognition..
The city council’s resolution highlights their intent to honor Will Smith for his achievements in entertainment, as well as his philanthropy and dedication to social justice and equality.
The renamed street runs through Wynnefield, the neighborhood where Smith grew up before becoming famous.
