Dover Cancels Fourth of July Celebration
Yet another festivity for the summer has been put aside this year due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Dover, Delaware’s annual Fourth of July celebration has been postponed for this summer due to concerns about following social distancing practices and in order to help stop the spread of the disease. Not to mention, there has been difficulty with generating donations and sponsors for the fireworks with so many small businesses closed and employees out of work.
Dover Mayor has spoken up about the postponed celebration, saying there will eventually be a celebration, one that cleebrates not only the country, but many other heroes who have risen to the healthcare challenges of 2020.
Mayor Christiansen went on to say, “as mayor, I promise when this is all over and we can gather safely we are going to have one hell of a celebration honoring all of our heroes that have brought us through this nightmare. We will honor doctors, nurses, medical support staff, police officers, firefighters, EMS personnel, paramedics, store clerks, teachers, daycare personnel, city workers, pastors, and anyone else I may have forgotten … and lastly, but by no means the least, we will celebrate the American spirit of our citizens young and old for the bravery and commitment to keep our country strong.”
The Fourth of July Celebration committee has taken into account that although the spread may be slowed by July, the recovery phases are the most vital to making a real impact on this virus.
They have also mentioned there could still be an event on or after Labor Day, but nothing has been confirmed just yet. They would love to devote the celebration to not only our independence and patriotism, but the front-line workers, businesses and everyone who has been affected by the coronavirus.
