Pennsylvania Has A New State Park Near Newark
Pennsylvania has a new state park near Newark Delaware!
My wife and I love visiting state parks here in Delaware, and in New Jersey, Maryland and in Pennsylvania.
And now we have another option!
Last week there was a celebration at Big Elk Creek State Park in Chester County. It’s one of 3 new state parks just added to the Pennsylvania state park system. Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (DCNR) Secretary Cindy Adams Dunn was on hand for the celebration.
“We are proud to welcome Big Elk Creek into our wonderful network of state parks,” said Dunn. “The addition of this park in one of the fastest growing areas in Pennsylvania will provide healthy, safe access to the outdoors for generations to come. We are grateful to Governor Tom Wolf and the state legislature for prioritizing the health and wellness of Pennsylvanians in this region.”
Big Elk Creek State Park is just over 1,700 acres and features 3.5 miles of the Big Elk Creek, a tributary of the Elk River and Chesapeake Bay.
The park is located in Southern Chester County less than ten miles from Newark, Delaware.
It features farmlands and forest, and is a refuge for many threatened and endangered species.
There will also be learning opportunities at the new state park. Discover how Indigenous people used the creek for moving things and natural resources. Additionally, those fleeing slavery used this area as stop in the Underground Railroad.
People have been using the park for hiking, trail running, mountain biking, enjoying the wildlife and just enjoying early fall days. Other outdoor opportunities include fishing and birdwatching.
Big Elk Creek has limited visitor amenities like parking and trails, and there are no restrooms, so plan accordingly.
