Nemours patients Jessica and Delany stopped by WJBR for an interview with Lora Lewis, the host of our public affairs programming.

Lora will join me on the air as we host the Nemours Children’s Hospital Help Our Kids Radiothon.  The radiothon will be on WJBR September 22 and 23.

During the radiothon, you will hear stories of hope and compassion.

One of the stories features the story of Jessica and Delany-who are not only patients, but former Nemours Ambassadors.

And while Jessica and Delany may appear to be sisters, the 7 year old’s are unrelated.  However they have a bond that may go even deeper than being related.

Jessica is a cancer patient.  Delany is an arthritis patient.  They can’t remember not ever going to Nemours.  And through their treatment visits at the hospital, they became best friends.

Not only did the girls form a strong bond with each other, but also with their health care providers.   Jessica’s favorite nurse is “Nurse Rogers”.  Delany is close with “Dr. Jen”.  Delany says about “Dr. Jen”, “she’s just really nice”!    And Jessica thinks “Nurse Rogers” is “just really kind and sweet”.

It is more than understandable that sometimes the girls are scared.  However the girls say the Nemours associates give tons of reassurance and make them feel better.  The girls speak so highly of Nurse Rogers and Dr. Jen adding that “they’re nice and they make each child feel welcome.”  The health team goes over every step of treatment before it happens.  If a treatment hurts, the nurses and doctors say, “I’ll give you a sticker afterwards”.

The girls have a lot of stickers.

Other things that make the girls feel better during treatment are coloring, stuffed animals, teddy bears and comfy blankets.

When blood is drawn, the girls are given a pinwheel that takes their mind off of the pain and process.

The friends get their blood draw together and hold each other’s hand, and tell each other it’s going to be ok.  And they do it together.

The WJBR staff has spent some time with the girls at last  year’s radiothon and we look forward to having them live on the air with us to hear more of their story.

Nemours patients Jessica and Delany are just 2 of the many patients and families you will hear stories of compassion, hope and love on the Nemours Children’s Hospital Help Our Kids Radiothon as we help with Nemours Child Life Programs.

Tune in.  Listen. Give. Nemours patients Jessica and Delany
