Delaware Police Number Used In A Phone Scam
Seems like there is a new scam everyday. This time we saw a Delaware police number used in a phone scam statewide.
According to Shore News Network The Delaware State Police have issued a warning for a recurring phone scam that involves a “spoofed” number.
This number is used by the Delaware State Police.
In the press release the Delaware State Police say “The Delaware State Police is aware of multiple incidents in which individuals have received phone calls from a Delaware State Police-issued telephone number. Only the number appears on the caller ID; if that number is looked up, it shows that it is a valid Delaware State Police phone number.”
The press release goes on to say “Caller ID spoofing is when a caller deliberately falsifies the information transmitted to your caller ID display to disguise their identity. Spoofing is often used to trick someone into giving away valuable personal information so it can be used in fraudulent activity or sold illegally.”
The Delaware State Police say that they will never request payment for fines, traffic tickets, or bail.
These transactions are not done via phone but rather by the respective court systems.
They also say that electronic payments are not accepted via phone for court matters,
The Delaware State Police say that if someone tries to contact you regarding a family member, you should not offer information about that family member. They also say do not provide information about yourself.
They advise that you contact that family member yourself to verify their current status.
Indicators of a scammer are “are threats, orders not to hang up, and other statements where the scammer places urgency on their request for information or money” according to a press release.
