Another Delaware Athlete Reaches The Major Leagues
Seems to be a trend recently but another Delaware athlete has reached the Major Leagues.
The call up is official as a Cape Henlopen graduate will make his MLB debut with the Oakland Athletics.
According to Yahoo! Sports “Cape Henlopen High graduate Zack Gelof has been promoted to the Oakland Athletics for Friday’s opener of a three-game series against the Minnesota Twins at Oakland Coliseum, according to numerous reports. Ranked as the Athletics’ No. 3 prospect by mlb.com, Gelof was Oakland’s second-round draft pick, 60th overall, in 2021 out of the University of Virginia where he batted a career .319.”
The Rehoboth Beach native is now stranger to the spotlight. Zack Gelof was the 2018 Delaware High School Player of the year.
He also participated in the World Baseball Classic playing for Team Israel.
The call up comes two years TO THE DAY they drafted him in 2021.
Gelof has been playing with the Triple-A affiliate Las Vegas of the Oakland Athletics.
The call up is no shock because of his first half statistics while in Vegas.
“He’s batting .304 with a .401 OBP, 12 homers, and 20 stolen bases this season. In nine July games he’s 17-for-43 (.395) with four homers, 16 runs batted in, five doubles, and three steals. His 13.3% walk rate this season is the highest in his pro career and his strikeout rate has held pretty steady at 27.9% this year” according to Sports Illustrated.
Gelof isn’t the only Delaware athlete that has reached the Major Leagues this season
The 2015 Delaware High School Baseball Player of the Year Brandon Walter, who attended University of Delaware, was called up as a pitcher back in June for the Boston Red Sox.
Walter played his high school ball at Hodgson VoTech.
Walter became just the third Blue Hen to record 100-plus strikeouts in the season. He was also third on Delaware’s all-time list with 252 strikeouts when he graduated.
He was drafted in 2019 in the 26th round of the MLB Draft.
So many Delaware athletes are getting their Major League call ups!
