David Lee Roth took to social media to pay tribute to Eddie Van Halen following news of the guitarist’s passing.

Roth shared a photo of him and Van Halen together with the simple caption, “What a long great trip it’s been…”

Roth sings on seven of Van Halen’s 12 studio albums: 1978’s Van Halen, 1979’s Van Halen II, 1980’s Women and Children First, 1981’s Fair Warning, 1982’s Diver Down, 1984’s 1984 and 2012’s A Different Kind of Truth. Roth’s tenure with Van Halen spanned from 1974-1985, a brief reunion in 1996 and then from 2007 to the present day.

Van Halen passed away today (October 6) following a bout with cancer at the age of 65. His death was confirmed by his son, Wolfgang, who wrote on social media, “I can’t believe I’m having to write this, but my father, Edward Lodewijk Van Halen, has lost his long and arduous battle with cancer this morning. He was the best father I could ever ask for. Every moment I’ve shared with him on and off the stage was a gift. My heart is broken and I don’t think I’ll ever fully recover from this loss. I love you so much, Pop.”
