Philadelphia Family Starts Cancer Research Fund For Dogs At Penn Vet
Sometimes tragedy can spark creativity or inspiration. This couldn’t be more true for one Philadelphia family that started a cancer research fund for dogs at Penn Vet.
The Story of Miso
Michael and Joy adopted Miso when she was a puppy in September 2010.
The Harris family’s beloved cocker spaniel, Miso was diagnosed with clear cell carcinoma in January.
Clear Cell Carcinoma is a rare cancer with very few treatment options. Miso was given only 3 months to live after the diagnosis.
Miso is 13 years old and still enjoying life today, living much longer than originally expected.
Joy and Michael Harris of Queen Village, said they wanted to do something in the dog’s honor.
Miso Harris Research Fund was started to help create more opportunities and funds for canine cancer treatments and cures.
Cancer Research
There are several organizations country-wide that have looked into canine diseases. However, the Harris family wanted to set up a cancer research fund for dogs right here in Philly.
A team of six veterinary oncologists will be leading the canine cancer clinical research at the Comprehensive Cancer Care service at Penn Vet.
So far, the Harrises’ friends and family have contributed $20,000 to the fundraising efforts.
The money will go a long way in understanding canine cancer and creating better treatments and therapies.
Joy Harris hopes others hear Miso’s story and donate to the fund to combat canine cancer.
