Billie Eilish and Jesse Rutherford Break Up After Less Than 1 Year
Billie Eilish and Jesse Rutherford have broken up after dating for less than a year. The “Happier Than Ever” singer-songwriter and The Neighbourhood frontman apparently “split amicably and remain good friends,” a rep for Eilish told People in a statement Wednesday (May 17). They added, “All cheating rumors are false. Both are currently single.”
Eilish, 21, was last spotted hanging out with Rutherford, 31, at Coachella last month. The musicians first sparked romance rumors in October when the pair were spotted catching dinner and kissing in front of the paparazzi. After their PDA went viral online, they went Instagram official on Billie’s page following Halloween.

The “Your Power” singer captioned her post: “life is craaaaaaaaaaaaaaazy. happy halloween.” Though the photo of their matching costume has been removed from the post, one of the slides shows Jesse in a clown costume, making people laugh as he says, “That’s why we’re all fans anyway!” and throws a rat at them. The final slide was a photo of Billie in a Little Bo Peep costume while the “Sweater Weather” singer was in full old-man makeup (bald cap, grey hair, suspenders).
Criticism of Jesse
The inspiration behind their Halloween costumes seemed to be the former couple’s creepy way of telling the world that they are very aware of their 11-year-age gap. Many fans commented on the post at the time, criticizing the singer for the hypocrisy between her song “Your Power” — which delves into age and power dynamics — and her romantic relationship with Rutherford.

Eilish spoke publicly about her boyfriend in November as part of her yearly Vanity Fair interview titled “Same Interview, Sixth Year.” As we previously reported, Eilish said of her relationship, “It’s really cool and I’m really excited and I’m really happy about it. I managed to get…to a point in my life…where I not only was known by a person that I thought was the hottest f—ing f—er alive, but pulled his a–! Are you kidding me? Can we just [get a] round of applause for me? Thank you, Jesse Rutherford, everyone.” Eilish continued, adding that she “locked that motherf—er down.” She went on to explain how she’s “really inspired by her beau, and that he was “inspired by” her.
