Two teens sparked a generational debate online with just one
TikTok video. TikTok user Dalia Hamad created the sensation. In the clip, she and a friend play a supposedly random selection of 2000’s pop hits. While the clip plays, they move from one side of the screen to the other to indicate if they know each song or not. The clip features tracks, including
50 Cent’s “In Da Club,” and
Rhianna’s “Live Your Life.” Ultimately, the teens never move to the “know it” side. Of course, the video went viral on TikTok. It received over 500,000 views and countless comments from people who are both outraged and confused. It even sparked a bunch of follow-up videos, in which older TikTok users posted their real-time reactions to the teens.
In a
follow-up clip from Dalia and her friend, claimed they had been lying about knowing the songs! They even sing along to several of the songs from the original clip. Ultimately, it is unclear if the first video was staged or not. Some TikTok users even took the opportunity to smooth over the generational divide, with some people writing things like, “Wow but it’s ok different generation and younger generations don’t know all the cool music we had. I can’t say I know all of their music.”
