Lizzo Addresses Plagiarism Accusations, Gets The Law Involved
Lizzo is finally publicly addressing allegations that her song “Truth Hurts” has been plagiarized.
She went to Instagram to talk directly to fans. She writes, “The men who now claim a piece of Truth Hurts did not help me write any part of the song. They had nothing to do with the line or how I chose to sing it. There was no one in the room when I wrote Truth Hurts, except me, Ricky Reed, and my tears. That song is my life, and its words are my truth.”
The singer also addresses the line in the song, “I just took a DNA test, turns out I’m 100 percent that bitch.” She explains that the line came from a meme. She also gives the original writer credit. She explains, “I later learned that a tweet inspired the meme. The creator of the tweet is the person I am sharing my success with… not these men. Period.”

Truth Hurts was written in June fyi— someone made a meme on IG that said “I’m 100% that bitch” and we were inspired, I give that meme credit when I talk about making the song. I’ve never seen ur viral tweet but I’m glad it exists.

Now Lizzo is getting the law involved in dealing with the men accusing her of plagiarism. TMZ explains that she has filed legal documents asking a judge to declare that these men have no copyright on “Truth Hurts,” and that they have no right to share in the song’s profits. She also adds in the documents that she “suspects they are trying to set up an ‘opportunistic’ lawsuit.”
