Michael Keaton speaks onstage during the special screening and Q&A Event for Hulu's "DOPESICK" at El Capitan Theatre on June 14, 2022 in Los Angeles, California.

Michael Keaton is excited to be reprising his mischievous “bio-exorcist” character in Beetlejuice 2. He told Empire over the weekend that playing the titular character is “the most f—in’ fun you can have working.” Keaton, 71, adds, “It’s so fun, it’s so great. And you know what it is? We’re doing it exactly like we did the first movie.”

The original 1988 Beetlejuice film is to be directed by Tim Burton once again. The award-winning actor said he and Burton talked about a sequel “years and years ago, never telling anybody.” The two made a pact that if it were to happen, “it has to be done as close to the way we made it the first time. Making stuff up, making stuff happen, improvising and riffing, but literally handmade stuff like people creating things with their hands and building something.”

Keaton says their collaboration was “f—in’ great. It’s the most fun I’ve had working on a movie in I can’t tell you how long.”

The Cast, Old and New

Last month, Warner Bros. officially announced the news of Beetlejuice 2, with Winona Ryder also returning for her beloved role as Lydia Deetz. Wednesday‘s Jenna Ortega has been confirmed to star as Lydia’s daughter, while Justin Theroux and Willem Dafoe will be joining the cast in yet-to-be-revealed roles. Photos of Winona Ryder in character have been circulating online.

Brad Pitt’s production company Plan B is producing the sequel. In the first film, a recently deceased married couple (played by Geena Davis and Alec Baldwin) hates the new family (Catherine O’Hara and Jeffrey Jones play the parents, and Ryder portrays their teenage daughter) that moved into their home. The deceased couple contacts Beetlejuice to help them haunt this family from the Netherworld. Beetlejuice grossed nearly $75 million worldwide and inspired a Tony-nominated Broadway musical. After a four-year run, the show closed in January due to the pandemic.

In another reprisal of one of his iconic roles, Keaton will be next seen as Batman in The Flash, which comes out on June 16.

Beetlejuice 2 is set to be released in theaters on Sept. 6, 2024.
