Delaware Gets A New And Unique State Dog
Delaware has taken a step into a new realm with a very unique and creative state dog!
The state’s former state dog was the Golden Retriever, a pup near and dear to my heart.
The Golden Retriever had been the state dog since 2019. According to State Symbols “The adoption of an official state dog for Delaware began when 4th-grade students wrote letters to their legislators as part of a combined lesson on state symbols and persuasive writing taught by teacher Kathryne Peters at Learning Express Academy in Newark. The students also considered the beagle and the fox bull terrier, but the golden retriever ultimately won the class “election.”
A new state dog was officially announced this week.
On Tuesday, Governor John Carney signed into law that the “Rescue Dog” is the official state dog of Delaware.
According to WRDE “Senate Bill 37 takes effect upon being signed into law. Title 29 of the Delaware Code currently recognizes the Golden Retriever as the Delaware state dog. Humane Animal Partners says Delaware is sending a strong message of support to millions of dogs currently in shelters across the United States, as well as animal welfare organizations.”
I was shocked to know that not every state has a state dog!
Delaware’s new state dog joins Maryland’s Chesapeake Bay retriever, Pennsylvania’s Great Dane, and New Jersey’s The Seeing Eye dog as local state pups.
New Jersey and Delaware have a somewhat similar state dog as their dogs don’t single out a breed.
New Jersey named The Seeing Eye dog their official state dog in 2020. The Seeing Eye, based in Morristown, NJ, was first established in 1929 and is the world’s oldest existing guide dog school. according to the AKC.
We love our rescues!
