Helen’s Sausage House to Open New Storefront In Newark
The iconic restaurant in Smyrna, Delaware, Helen’s Sausage House, is set to open a brand new location on Main Street in Newark, Delaware this fall. Helen’s Sausage House is best known to Delaware residents for their incredible sausage sandwiches and breakfast foods. Helen’s was first opened in 1983. The Smyrna location currently opens at 4am – 12pm every day except Sunday.
When Clifford J. Murphy III took over Helen’s Sausage House in Smyrna last August, he did it with the goal of expanding the Delaware icon to a Newark location in the future. The new Helen’s Sausage House will be opened by Helen’s grandson and third generation owner, Murphy. It will take the place of the former Duck Donuts store on Main Street, which was a very popular donut shop to University of Delaware college students.
“As soon as I started talking about opening in Newark, we immediately got positive feedback. That really helped solidify the decision for me,” Murphy said. “When I started looking at locations, I knew we had to be on Main Street. The opportunity to carry the historic mantle of the Post House was too good to pass up.” Murphy is looking forward to sharing everything that makes Helen’s famous with Newark residents and University of Delaware students. Helen’s full menu will be available in Newark, with the same Kirby and Holloway sausage and scrapple at the heart of it.
“I’m not messing with what’s been working for 40 years. Customers come here because they know they can expect consistent quality and good food. I’ll make sure that’s true in Newark too,” Murphy said. The Newark location, at 145 E Main St., will serve breakfast and lunch with slightly different hours than the Smyrna store. Late-night weekend hours may also be introduced. Details will be announced ahead of the restaurant opening.
