Legalizing Recreational Marijuana Sales and Usage in Delaware Could Be On The Horizon
Full legalization of marijuana in Delaware could come to fruition in the coming days. The Bill to legalize marijuana has reached the desk of Governor John Carney and it is now up to him to either pass or veto the bill. The Governor has 10 business days to take action. If he does not veto the bill, it will pass.
In May of 2022, Governor Carney vetoed the bill that was initially proposed to legalize marijuana recreationally. He stated, “I recognize the positive effect marijuana can have for people with certain health conditions, and for that reason, I continue to support the medical marijuana industry in Delaware” according to PBS. He went on to say, “I supported decriminalization of marijuana because I agree that individuals should not be imprisoned solely for the possession and private use of a small amount of marijuana.”
Local organizations and politicians have voiced their opinions on both ends of the spectrum. Some believe the legalization of marijuana will result in more crime while some think it will lower the crime rate. Newark Councilman and police officer, Travis McDermott stated, “In a college town where there’s propensity for people to drink and maybe use recreational drugs more than other places in the state, we could have an issue on our hands.” Ruth Hamilton said, “Hopefully, Carney will sign it. Stop being a mopey dope governor and wavering to the police chiefs. Even the lieutenant governor is in support of this bill.” according to Bay to Bay News.
