A New Pizza Place Is Replacing Mama Celeste In Dewey
With Mama Celeste closing it’s doors last summer, people wondered what would be replacing the longtime pizza joint.
Dewey will welcome a new pizza place this May. Kind of.
Rumors swirled that The Starboard would just absorb Mama Celeste as extra space and extra bathrooms, but the pizza place will remain…a pizza place.
According to the Cape Gazette plans are in motion to open Starboard Sauced by the beginning of summer.
“Starboard Sauced is taking shape in the space formerly occupied by Mama Celeste in Dewey Beach, and owner Steve “Monty” Montgomery said he hopes to open the restaurant in May.”
Mama Celeste served pizza in Dewey since 1989.
The new Starboard Sauced will be located at 2001 Coastal Hwy, Dewey Beach, DE 19971.
The Cape Gazette also say that Mama will help in the new restaurant but Papa is retired.
Mama Celeste was loved and popular amongst its customers.
One YELP review summed it up perfectly: “The dough is soft and slightly sweet. The flavor is outstanding. One of my favorite tasting doughs. The sauce has a fresh tomato taste with minimal spices. The cheese is perfect. Mama C’s does not skimp here but also doesn’t overdo it. It sets up nicely, has good flavor and just the right amount of grease. ”
According to the Starboard’s website “The Starboard was originally built and opened by Duke Duggan around 1960 and has gone through several changes over the years. Purchased and run by the Hearn family during the late 80’s and early 90’s, Chip Hearn grew The Starboard into a nationally known hot spot. Purchased by current owners Steve ‘Monty’ Montgomery and his partners in 1999, The Starboard’s popularity is now off the charts as it has grown into a national phenomenon!”
