The Philadelphia Union was just another local team that made us all very proud last season. Being a Philadelphia fan was super exciting last season and it’s getting us pumped for this year ahead.

The Union will have their first game against Columbus on March 25th, 2023.

In honor of the 13th anniversary of the Philadelphia Union‘s inaugural game, New Castle County Executive Matt Meyer has declared Saturday, March 25th, , Philadelphia Union Day in New Castle County!

According to the NCC facebook page, County Executive Meyer traveled to Subaru Park recently to honor the Philadelphia Union after their historic 2022 Major League Soccer (MLS) season.

The Union head coach Jim Curtin was named MLS Coach of the Year. In addition, Andre Blake became the first three-time winner of the MLS Goalkeeper of the Year award, defender Jakob Glesnes was named defender of the year. Captain Alejandro Bedoya was named MLS Humanitarian of the Year and numerous front office members won league-wide awards.

The Union has strong ties to Delaware. First, they train at Wilmington’s Chase Fieldhouse during the winter months. The owners have a new partnership with Wilmington’s WSFS Bank for the development of a new soccer complex around Subaru Park.

Bryan James, one of the co-founders of the Sons of Ben, is also from Wilmington. Sons of Ben is the Union supporters group credited with bringing an MLS franchise to the region.

It’s clear that Wilmington and Philly have strong ties to each other especially when it comes to our sports teams. We’re excited to cheer on the Union this season.

Our only next question is, will there be a Union Day Parade In New Castle?
