Keanu Reeves showed just how playful he can be when a fan proposed marriage. This happened during the premiere of John Wick: Chapter 4 at the SXSW Film Festival earlier on Monday (March 13).
Reeves, 58, was discussing how he had to keep his character’s watch and wedding ring as mementos from the shoot. Then someone from the audience shouted, “I’ll marry you!” He replied, “Yeah, be careful what you wish for,” according to Variety.
The “f—ing awesome” crowd, as described by Keanu, continued their Q&A session, with another fan asking him if her ever really ages. Keanu quipped back, “Yeah man, I age. I really—I age. It’s happening, man.” Another person yelled “Bring back Constantine,” referencing Reeves’ beloved 2005 DC adaptation. “I’m trying, man,” the actor said with a sigh.
Jokes of marriage proposals aside, Keanu is actually spoken for. He’s been with his girlfriend, visual artist Alexandra Grant, for a very long time. The couple first met at a dinner party in 2009. They quietly dated for years before going public with their relationship in 2019. Since then, the two have made several more public appearances. But they generally keep their private life out of the spotlight.
According to Alexandra’s longtime friend Jennifer Tilly, the couple even waited to tell their inner circle about the relationship. As she explained in a 2020 interview with Page Six, “I remember a couple years ago, about a year and a half ago, [Alexandra] said, ‘Keanu Reeves is my boyfriend’ and I’m like, ‘Wait. What?'”
Calling Keanu and Alexandra, 49, “sort of the perfect couple,” the actress added at the time, “I think everybody wishes that they had something like that. It’s not a razzle-dazzle Hollywood romance.” Reeves and Grant worked on a 2011 book together called Ode to Happiness; he provided the text while Grant did the illustrations. They then released a second book called Shadows in 2016 and cofounded the publishing company X Artists’ Books the following year.
John Wick: Chapter 4 will open in theaters on Friday, March 24.
