Philadelphia Folk Festival Has Been Cancelled
Another music fest will be put on pause as the Philadelphia Folk Festival has been cancelled.
The 2023 version, and 60th anniversary, of the legendary folk gathering has been paused for the time being.
According to the Philadelphia Folk Festival’s website “Folksong Society is taking a PAUSE this year, 2023, on presenting the 2023 Philadelphia Folk Festival, while we rebuild. We are grateful for the support of our community and look forward to seeing everyone in 2024!”
Reasons cited include financial struggles including the possibility of declaring bankruptcy. Organizers also cited the increase of violent threats towards the festival.
“The 2023 Philadelphia Folk Festival was expected to take over Old Pool Farm in Harleysville, Montgomery County, on Aug. 17-20. Instead, the Folksong Society will “rethink the size, shape, purpose and funding” Philly Voice reports.
Costs, size, and security are an ongoing problem for large scale music festivals.
The 2023 version of Firefly Music Festival has also been put on hold. The postponement of the show was announced back in October.
In the official statement, organizers said, “After 10 magical years of Firefly in the Woodlands, we’ve decided to take a year off to recharge our lights. We will see you in 2024.”
Presented by the Philadelphia Folksong Society, the Philadelphia Folk Festival is the longest continuously run outdoor music festival in North America.
Founded in 1957, The non-profit Philadelphia Folksong Society offers programs of presentation, participation, and education throughout Greater Philadelphia and the nation year round and contributes to the preservation of a vast variety of musical styles and historical perspectives.
This year’s lineup was set to include Michael Franti and Spearhead, The War and Treaty, and American Acoustic: Punch Brothers and Watchhouse featuring Sarah Jarosz.
