Delco Teen Creates A Resource Closet For Classmates In Need
Imagine being a teenager and already having the initiative to make a major impact. That’s what happens when a Delco teen creates a resource closet for classmates in need.
Aicha Coulibaly came up with the idea to repurpose an unused closet in the halls of her high school. Coulibaly turned the closet into a safe place where her peers could find resources that they may need. She started with a closet full of hygiene products like shampoo, toothbrushes, toothpaste, etc.
The closet has blossomed into so much more than that.
What was even more helpful for Aicha, is that the school board approved her initiative, making it official. Since then, she was able to grow her project and provide many more resources aside from hygiene items.
The Academy Park High School junior has spent the last year collecting items for the closet. The school provides the space for the resources off the gym. The closet, called “Knights Chamber” is fully equipped with anything a student may need, including school supplies and even brand-new sweatshirts
Students looking to access the closet can reach out to a faculty or staff member that they trust. Assistant Principal, Michael Hooven, who’s been helping the teens run the one-stop shop, says he has already had some students come to him.
Now that the closet is growing, the teens are focusing on getting the word out by making flyers and promoting it on social media. The resource closet is always looking for donations and the school says they are looking for volunteers.
The Academy Park High School has a motto on their website that reads “Change The World”. That is exactly what young Aicha is doing with this intuitive mission.
