Delaware School District Limiting Cell Phone Use
In a digital day and age, its tough to not be on your cell phone all the time. The struggle is the same for students. One Delaware district is limiting cell phone use with a new voluntary rule.
The Colonial School District has implemented a new cellphone initiative this year. The expectation is “out of sight, out of trouble.
Their goal is to improve social, emotional and academic well-being as students come back to school this year. It is not a requirement, but highly encouraged.
George Read, McCullough and Gunning Bedford Middle Schools are the test schools for the new initiative. They are introducing it in collaboration with YONDR. YONDR is a patented system to create phone free spaces.
YONDR has agreed to provide the schools with pouches for kids to put their phones in. Starting on the first day of class,, the schools will distribute these pouches. They will keep them through the year until the last day. The pouches stay closed and locked and can be magnetically unlocked at the end of the day.
Colonial educators found that their students had lower resiliency and fewer coping mechanisms ever since the pandemic. Research has shown that cell phone use has alarming effects on adolescents already experiencing troubles. Teachers and staff also say that cell phones have become more of a distraction.
The district is aware that not everyone will be a fan. But they are hoping that more people start to see the benefits and how this greatly impacts the children.
What do you think of the new initiative?
