Adele Promises ‘Filthy Jokes’ and a Night of Music for Oprah Special
Adele is giving us “one night only” this Sunday (November 14), via an intimate live performance on CBS outside the Griffith Observatory in Los Angeles.
Adele: One Night Only will also see the singer, 33, sit down for an interview with Oprah Winfrey. In an preview clip from the special shared today (November 10), although the performance is celebrating her highly-anticipated new album 30 (out November 19), it was revealed that she will begin with her 2015 hit “Hello.”
“I’m always going to start with ‘Hello,'” Adele said. “It’d be a bit weird if it was like, halfway through the set, you know? So yeah, I’m starting with it.” The “Easy on Me” singer explained that “Hello” was “the beginning of me trying to find myself, and I hadn’t figured out yet what it was that I had to do for that.”
She went on to explain the song’s importance to her, noting that she was addressing her past and future self in its lyrics. “When I wrote it, it was a real ode to like, little me, older me, all of these things,” she said. “It’s just a song about like, ‘I’m still here.’ Like, ‘Hi, I’m still here, I still exist in every aspect of my life.'”
On stage, Adele promises the crowd that she’ll sing a mix of “old” and “new ones” before joking: “How posh is this?” Winfrey, 67, says in the trailer, “Nobody’s more compelling with truth than Adele,” describing the TV event as a “very special night.”
Speaking about her performance for the special, Adele said, “It will look really elegant, then I’ll tell a load of filthy jokes and stand-up. It will be real whip lash for ’em.”
Among the guests seen in the trailer are Lizzo, Gabrielle Union and Dwayne Wade, who are treated to a performance of “Rolling in the Deep” from the singer. UK audiences will be treated to their own Adele special titled: An Audience with Adele, which will air the following Sunday (November 21 November). Filming took place at the London Palladium on Saturday (November 6), with Beyoncé, Idris Elba, Dua Lipa and Stormzy among the attendees.
