Sinkhole Appears Above Crypt Containing 80,000 Corpses
A sinkhole appeared in a public park in the UK, located right on top of a former burial site containing 80,000 bodies. The sinkhole was said to have formed because the site had not been filled in properly. Grant Gardens, where the hole appeared, was opened in 1914 and is above a former cemetery believed to hold nearly a hundred thousand bodies including slavery abolitionist Thomas Raffles who has been dead since 1863.
According to dailystar.co.uk, the memorials and structures that were once there are all removed now. However, the graves themselves all still remain underground. While footage was being taken of the sinkhole forming, the witness said she could feel the ground collapsing around her so she had to get off the grass quickly.
Since the sinkhole was reported, authorities have closed off the park and are working to make sure this doesn’t happen again. They ruled that the initial way the hole was filled along with wet weather led to this eerie occurrence.
