7 Steps to Good Grocery Shopping Etiquette

Today on the Mix Morning Show, we’re talking grocery shopping etiquette. What is considered truly good grocery cart etiquette? Well let’s define it with the help of Maralee McKee of Manners Mentor.

• 1. Stay to your right.

  Just like driving a car, stay to your right. This especially helps if you're a slow shopper. Fast shoppers can easily go around you and get to where they need to be without crashing into one another.

• 2. Park and walk when it’s on your left.

  If the item is on your left shelf, park your cart on the right side and walk across the aisle to grab the item.

• 3. Reaching in front of people (politely) is okay.

  In times of a pandemic, this one can get a little tricky. While wearing your mask, politely say excuse me and tell them you're trying to get the item they are in front of. Respect others' personal space and remember that some people are less comfortable with the pandemic than others. Do not reach from behind. Make yourself aware before reaching for an item.
• 4. Yield to oncoming shoppers if a parked cart is on your side.

  Just like driving on the road, give the oncoming traffic the right of way in this situation.

• 5. Before barreling out of an aisle, look both ways.

  We all learned it as kids before crossing the street. Same applies when exiting an aisle in the grocery store.

• 6. When checking out, stand in front of your cart as you place items on the belt.

  There's nothing harder than reaching constantly over the handle bars to get something from the basket. So just get in front of it.
• 7. Return your cart in the designated cart collectors.

  It is not the cart retriever's job to search Timbuktu for your shopping cart. It is their job to collect them from the designated places in the parking lot and return them to the store. They have made it convenient for you by placing these in the parking lot and employing someone to take them to the store from there. Please be courteous and make it convenient for the employee.
