Steve Miller Was Not a Fan of Jimi Hendrix’s Monterey Pop Moment
Jimi Hendrix lighting his guitar on fire at the Monterey Pop Festival in 1967 is one of rock’s most iconic moments, but Steve Miller absolutely hated it.
Miller reflected on the moment in a new interview with The Washington Post and said of the stunt, “I thought that was pathetic. When I saw Jimi Hendrix stop playing the music he was playing and get down on his knees and pull out a can of lighter fluid and squirt it on the thing and light it, I went, ‘Boy, this really f—ing sucks.'”
Miller did the interview with The Washington Post to promote his upcoming box set, ‘Welcome to the Vault’, that comes out this Friday (October 11.) Spanning three CDs and one DVD, Welcome to the Vault is made up of 52 audio tracks, with 38 of those tracks previously unreleased. Also included are five newly discovered Steve Miller Band tracks originally recorded in the 1960s and ’70s. As for the DVD, that includes 21 live performances including some rare clips from TV appearances and concert recordings.
The idea for the box set came from Miller’s wife, Janice Ginsberg Miller. Former band member David Denny organized 800 songs from Miller’s archive and then Ginsberg Miller, who also located some lost performance film footage, would present the material for Miller’s approval.
