Tom Petty Estate Battle: 4 Things to Know
It’s not uncommon for there to be estate issues when a celebrity dies unexpectedly. Sadly, this appears to be the case for the estate of Tom Petty.
TMZ was the first to report on the legal issues surrounding the Petty estate, with additional reporting done by Billboard and People. Petty’s widow, Dana, and his daughters from a previous relationship, Adria Petty and Annakim Violette, are the parties at the center of this dispute.
Here are five things to know about the goings-on around Petty’s estate.
1. Dana Petty has petitioned Los Angeles County court requesting they create an agreement to appoint a manager of the estate. She is also requesting that all decisions pertaining to the estate must require a consensus to prevent Adria and Annakim from having a complete override of any decisions.
2. Adria has filed her own petition with the court stating Dana is not abiding by two wishes from Tom’s will, which include giving her and Annakim equal say in estate decisions and to establish and transfer all “artistic properties” into a limited-liability company (LLC). The LLC would then be equally operated by the three women.
3. Each opposing party is accusing the other of preventing various things from happening. Dana is accusing Adria and Annakim of preventing the release of new solo tracks that would be added to a 25th-anniversary edition of the album Wallflowers. Dana’s petition claims by doing this, the estate lost out on a $1 million deal with Warner Bros. Records.
Adria’s petition accuses Dana of not setting up the LLC so she can have sole control of the “artistic properties.” By doing this, the daughters claim to have been excluded from “marketing, promotional, and artistic considerations” pertaining to the 2018 Petty boxset An American Treasure and the 2019 release The Best of Everything.
4. Dana has accused Adria of questionable behavior, which includes sending angry emails to various managers, record label reps and even members of the Heartbreakers.
