Shannen Doherty Shares ‘Miracle’ In Her Cancer Battle

Shannen Doherty is finally catching a break amid her stage 4 cancer battle, revealing there’s been a “miracle” breakthrough in her treatments. On Monday’s (January 29) installment of her Let’s Be Clear podcast, the Charmed alum says her radiation oncologist, Dr. Amin Mirhadi, put her on a new cancer infusion. However, when they didn’t see a difference after four treatments, her medical team wanted her to try something else — though she asked to stick it out. After doing so, Doherty’s body became receptive to the treatment after the sixth and seventh treatments.
The treatment was breaking down the blood-brain barrier. Without breaking down, this can prevent the chemotherapy drugs from reaching the brain tumor cells to destroy them. In Shannen’s case, anti-cancer drugs are now able to penetrate her tumor cells via the weakened barrier. Though she didn’t name exactly what infusion treatment she was undergoing, she called the success of the treatment to be “God intervening and being like I’m going to give her a break.” The 90210 alum admitted how afraid she was of radiation, “especially when it’s to your brain.” She added, “I was petrified” and wondered, “‘Is it going to change who I am?’” The 52-year-old added that she asked her doctor, “Are you going to zap something? Am I not going to think as quickly?” She joked that she even requested her doctor to tap the part of her brain that “made me speak eight fluent languages. He ignored me and didn’t do it.”
Shannen was first diagnosed with breast cancer back in 2015, and after two years of chemo, she was in remission. However, the cancer returned in 2020 and spread to her brain and bones last year. “Every day is a gift, and there are so many new things in the works that I think hope is always there,” Doherty said on her podcast. “All I can do is live each day in as much of a positive manner, with a lot of hope, as I can.”
