Lil Nas X went to Twitter to get some things off of his chest about being snubbed from the 2022 BET Awards.
“thank you bet awards. an outstanding zero nominations again. black excellence!” he wrote in a series of posts that have since been deleted.
A fan asked the singer why he felt like he should be nominated and he responded: “idk maybe 3 of the biggest songs of last year & a critically acclaimed album… i feel like that should’ve helped me a bit.”
Lil Nas X’s album Montero was released in September of last year and was nominated for “Album Of The Year” at the 64th Annual Grammy Awards. The song which shares the same name as the album was nominated for “Record Of The Year,” “Song Of The Year,” and “Best Music Video.” Additionally, “Industry Baby” featuring Jack Harlow was nominated for “Best Melodic Rap Performance.”
The award show announced its nominees yesterday (June 1) which starts off Black Music Month and Pride Month, which added salt to the wound. When it came down to it, the Montero creator, who is openly gay, said it’s not about the nominations but about being accepted.
“not even that, doesn’t even have to be me nominated,” he wrote. “i just feel like black gay ppl have to fight to be seen in this world and even when we make it to the top mfs try to pretend we are invisible.”
However, his “Industry Baby” collaborator Jack Harlow, who is white, was nominated for “Best Male Hip Hop Artist” which Twitter picked up on.
