Wilmington's annual street cleaning begins today, April 1, running through October 31 under the "Beautiful City Campaign." Public Works teams will clean streets according to posted schedules throughout neighborhoods.
Car owners need to move their vehicles during scheduled cleaning times to avoid fines. People with valid handicap permits can keep their designated spaces even during cleaning hours.
Special trucks clean the streets, picking up loose trash and built-up dirt. Street signs show exact times when parking spots need to be empty for cleaning trucks to pass.
This work is part of Mayor Mike Purzycki's 2017 plan. His larger effort included new trash bins, neighborhood cleanups, and tough rules against illegal dumping.

Street sweeping is just one part of the city's cleaning program. Crews work on both main roads and residential streets across different areas.
Teams plan routes carefully, making sure they cover every public street. Their planning helps work flow smoothly from one block to the next.
City officials ask residents to look at nearby signs for cleaning schedules. These signs tell people when streets need to be clear of parked cars.
Each cleaning picks up loose trash and clears away months of built-up street debris. The trucks follow set routes marked by neighborhood signs.
The program works best when residents and workers do their part. Clear curbs help crews properly clean areas that cars would normally cover.
