April is shaping up to be a busy month for the theater arts in the Philadelphia region. For one, Philly Theatre Week is back! Here's a look at some highlights of what's coming to Philly-area stages for audiences: 

'In the Heights'

Lin-Manuel Miranda's first Tony Award-winning musical details life in New York City's Washington Heights neighborhood. The musical is told largely through the stories of diverse perspectives. Tickets start at $64.

'Dreamgirls'

The six-time Tony Award-winning musical traces the story of a 1960s all-female performing group that resembles The Supremes. Tickets start at $49.

April 2-May 4 | Walnut Street Theatre, 825 Walnut St., Philadelphia

'The Hobbit'

This stage adaptation of J.R.R. Tolkien's famous book recounts the story of hobbit Bilbo Baggins as he takes a journey with a wizard and a group of dwarves to conquer a dragon named Smaug and reclaim the clan's ancestral home. Tickets start at $25.

Philly Theatre Week

April 3-13 | Various locations in Philadelphia

During this 10-day event, Philadelphia venues will host theater performances, workshops, and readings, including favorites like "110 in the Shade," "Anthony and Cleopatra," and original productions like a comedy based on "The Book of Mormon" and a mother-daughter poetry show. Tickets for all shows are pay-what-you-can. 

'Rift, or White Lies'

Two estranged brothers, one who's a novelist and the other a convicted murderer in a white supremacist prison gang, reconnect as adults and try to understand one another. Tickets start at $38.

Broadway at the Colonial Theatre

April 27 | The Colonial Theatre in Phoenixville, Chester County

Broadway stars John Riddle ("Frozen" and "Phantom of the Opera"), Mary Kate Morrissey ("Wicked" and "Mean Girls"), and Noah Ricketts ("The Great Gatsby" and "Beautiful") come to the Colonial Theater for a night of live performances from Broadway hits. Tickets start at $25.
