Philadelphia Names Street ‘Will Smith Way’ Near Actor’s Old High School
During a moving ceremony on Wednesday, March 26, 2025, the city renamed a section of North 59th Street to “Will Smith Way” – honoring one of Philly’s biggest stars.
The newly named street runs alongside Overbrook High School, where Smith went to school. During the event, Mayor Cherelle Parker gave Smith her first key to the city as mayor.
“With all of his accomplishments and success, wherever you see him in the world, he is unapologetic about letting you know that ‘I’m Will Smith, in West Philadelphia born and raised,'” said Parker during the ceremony, according to NBC Philadelphia.
Smith spoke warmly about his hometown. “Philly, I love you. I am mine, you are mine. “
The celebration brought together students, Philadelphia city employees, and local residents who filled the Wynnefield area. Their turnout showed Smith’s strong connection to West Philadelphia.
At the ceremony, Smith talked about how he got his famous nickname. His tenth-grade teacher, Ms. Brown, started calling him “Prince Charming” – which later became “The Fresh Prince.”
“You can’t make a life if you’re not willing to sacrifice and work for your dreams,” Smith said, sharing his father’s advice.
The timing works perfectly – just two days before Smith releases “Based on a True Story,” his first album in 20 years.
At the event, Mayor Parker shared her vision for a star-studded 4th of July concert featuring local icons The Roots, Jill Scott, Meek Mill, and Will Smith. Before wrapping up his speech, Smith teased, “See you on the 4th of July,” hinting that something exciting may be in the works.
