Former NFL Pro Bowler DeSean Jackson Takes Over as Head Coach at Delaware State
NFL standout DeSean Jackson has changed direction, stepping in to lead Delaware State University’s football program. The former Pro Bowl receiver takes charge of a team that managed just one win in 2024.
“We’re not rebuilding. This isn’t rebuilding. We don’t have time to waste. We’re doing this right now,” said Jackson to CBS Sports.
The Hornets struggled badly last season. They couldn’t secure any MEAC conference wins, finishing with an 0-5 record. Now, Jackson has his sights set on winning both the conference championship and earning a spot in the Celebration Bowl.
The new coach’s local ties run deep. His Pittsburgh-born parents and his family’s strong connections to historically black colleges helped pave his way to this position.
Jackson plans to recruit from nearby territories including Delaware, Philadelphia, New York, and the DMV area. His goal is to prevent talented local players from choosing other programs.

Still, HBCU teams struggle with the transfer portal. Holding onto good players is challenging, making it hard to build lasting success.
