New Castle Is Home To Delaware's Favorite Hot Dog

Here we go again!  We are honoring yet another summer backyard BBQ favorite.  Wednesday, July 19th is National Hot Dog Day, according to National Calendar Day.

Yes, there is a day for everything and it seems a lot of our favorite guilty pleasures are celebrated in July.

July is National Ice Cream month, so we told you about these Ice Cream Shops In Delaware where locals go.   Friday, July 14th was National French Fry day, so we had to let you know where locals go for their favorite French fries.

Now, it's time to honor the hot dog.  🌭

The crew over at Eat This went on the hunt for the best hot dog in every state across the country.  Using reviews from both locals and tourists alike they put together their list.

So, what place in Delaware has the best hot dog?  None other than The Dog House in New Castle.   And we can't say we're surprised.

The Dog House has been a Delaware favorite since the 1950's.  Locals enjoy this cash only, hot spot and their original counter with 17 stools from 70 years ago.  Serving up footlong dogs with toppings like chili, cheese, house made relish and sauerkraut.  Are you drooling yet?

Locals Say These 8 Locations Have Delaware’s Best French Fry

We went on the hunt for Delaware's Best French Fry

In 2023, there's been some controversy over National French Fry Day.  Up until this year, French Fries were always celebrated on July 13th.

According to National Calendar Day, Checker's and Rally's started a petition last year to change the day, and it appears they were victorious.

National French Fry Day 🍟

Starting in 2023, it's been decided that French Fry Day will now be recognized on the second Friday in July.  Get it...FRY-Day?  Makes total sense to me.  So, that means National French Fry Day is July 14, 2023.

July is quite a busy month for celebrating summer food favorites.  The entire month of July is dedicated to Ice Cream because July is National Ice Cream Month.  In honor of the sweet treat, I recently put out a list of the top 12 ice cream shops in Delaware that locals go to for a scoop.  Since our WJBR listeners had so much to say about ice cream, I thought, why not ask about them about the best places to grab some fries in the First State?

I asked around and took to the WJBR station Facebook page to simply ask where to go for Delaware's Best French Fries, and we received comments aplenty.  There is a clear favorite amongst those who answered, and where that is probably won't come as a surprise to most of us.  But, I was surprised at just how many places were mentioned at least once.  Places like Trolley Tap House, Skipjack in Newark, Dewey Beach Country Club, DQ and KFC.

With this list, I am sure the condiment debate will also ensue.  Delawareans are hell bent on vinegar being a top choice for French Fries, and for good reason, it's delicious.  Also big fans of gravy and Old Bay seasoning.  It's a matter of preference, because you can't really go wrong with any of the aforementioned options.

So, in no particular order, these are the places we were told have the best French fries in the state.

TRIGGER WARNING 🚨 some of these locations are going to upset you.

McDonald's

One fan commented that McDonald's were her favorite when done right, and several other WJBR fans agreed.  When hot with just the right amount of salt, they really are good!

Thrashers

The clear favorite amongst Delawareans.  Some say that the Ocean City Boardwalk originals are superior.  Is there really a huge difference?  I don't know

Red Robin

Another chain making the list and mentioned quite a few times actually.  Good with the ranch sauce and the Red Robin seasoning.  They're bottomless too.  It's a shame the Wilmington location is no longer.

Deerhead Hot Dogs

A classic in Wilmington.  Who doesn't love a good hot dog with their fries.

The Dog House

Another iconic location in New Castle.  Famous fries with malt vinegar or cheese?  YES, please!  You might hear about this place again for National Hot Dog Day, which happens to be July 19th

Five Guys

Yet a chain once again, but mentioned many times.  They're fresh cut and the portions are huge.  Big bang for your buck.

Crooked Hammock Brewery

One of my favorite spots too!  Especially the one down in Lewes.

Grottos

Grottos isn't just good for pizza.  Have you had the cheese fries?
