Billy McFarland, the man convicted behind the infamous scam of 2017, the Fyre Festival, says there will be another one coming. Just a year out of prison, he is already promising that there will be a “Fyre Festival II,” even though the first one never came to fruition.
“Fyre Festival II is finally happening,” the promoter posted on Twitter alongside a flame emoji. “Tell me why you should be invited.”
Comments came flooding in under the tweet due to its obvious bait-y nature. One person responded, “Imagine having this level of audacity.” While another said, “I’ll just wait for the documentaries.” Another person wrote, “tell me why you shouldn't be in jail.” Billy, 31, replied to this person, "it's in the best interest of those I owe for me to be working. people aren't getting paid back if i sit on the couch and watch tv. and because i served my time."
Even Limewire hilariously chimed in, "I know a safer way to enjoy music." Another person gave their reason for being invited: "Because I’m not Ja Rule." Billy simply replied, "you're in."
Fyre's Aftermath
Following Billy's tweets, Ja Rule, who promoted the festival (along with other celebs like Kendall Jenner, Bella Hadid and Hailey Baldwin) made it clear that he isn't affiliated this time around. Ja told People on Friday (April 14), “I don’t know nothing about it. I ain’t in it!”
Per Variety, McFarland was released from prison in 2022 after doing four years of a six-year sentence as a result of pleading guilty to charges involving defrauding investors and scamming ticket buyers. He raked in $27 million for the nonexistent Fyrefest when he was 25. He was fined $26 million, as well, and has vowed to find a way to pay the investors he owes.
Earlier in April, Billy tweeted: “I was one of the most Googled people in the world. What’s next will be the biggest comeback of all time. My plan: get some wins under my belt; rebuild trust, and build an audience so I can build the next media empire.”
The disastrous Fyre Festival has already had two documentaries made about it: Fyre Fraud on Hulu and Fyre: The Greatest Party that Never Happened on Netflix. A third documentary called After the Fyre is planned, centering around McFarland's post-prison "comeback."
