Jim Gardner’s Last Radio Interview On WJBR was with Deanna and Justin this morning at 9am.
Jim retires tonight from 6ABC and boy were we thrilled when he agreed to speak with us.
Aside from the bragging rights that his last radio interview before retirement is with US, we are just honored to chat with him.
Jim has been such a legend in this community and a household name for decades.
Our parents watched him on the news long before we were a twinkle in their eyes. We grew up as kids watching him as our parents cooked dinner.
We’ve known his face and his name for so long, it was surreal to speak to him on such a personal level.
Alas, we mustered up the courage to ask our questions and do it justice. We hope we did, at least!
Deanna and Justin brought in personal memories and anecdotes told by their parents as they riffed with Jim. The interview felt more like a conversation with a friend or for D&J, their favorite uncle.
Jim Gardner is not only humble, but he is just as lovable as you would imagine him to be. He is warm, kind and down to earth. A total pro on the phone the same way he is in front of the camera.
Deanna and Justin did ask Jim what he plans to do with his retirement and the response was more relatable than you’d imagine.
The interview aired this morning, December 21st at 9am. If you missed it, you can listen below in it’s entirety.
We wish Jim all the best in his retirement. Cheers to many more years of living your life and loving Philadelphia sports.
Thank you for always being there, for being a constant in our lives.

Jim Gardner Over The Years
Jim Gardner Over The Years has been a household name and a staple in the community. If you grew up between the 50s and now, you know who he is.
Watching the nightly new is part of many folk’s routine, especially if you live on the East Coast. There’s a certain love that we have for our local newscasters.
They bring us stories from our neighborhood and surrounding areas. We can always count on them to be there for the latest. When times get tough, they are a constant.
That’s what Jim Gardner has been for the Greater Philadelphia Area, a constant. He has had such a long a successful career with 6ABC. We’re sad to see him go but this retirement is so well deserved.
Most people don’t realize that Jim isn’t even from Philadelphia, you’d never be able to tell! The way he has embraced the city and its surroundings, it seems he was born with Brotherly Love in his veins.
Despite having moved to Philadelphia as an adult, he has absolutely made this area his home and we have been lucky to have him.
In 1970, Gardner became a desk assistant, writer, and producer for 1010 WINS in New York City. In 1972, Gardner became a reporter for WFAS radio in White Plains, New York, and soon became news director. Two years later, he began his television broadcast career at WKBW-TV in Buffalo, New York.[3]
Gardner has worked for WPVI in Philadelphia since June 1, 1976. He currently solo anchors the 6:00 PM weekday newscasts, which he has done since May 11, 1977; he solo anchored the 11:00 PM weekday newscast between May 11, 1977, and January 11, 2022.
