Amy Schumer Has Uterus and Appendix Removed Due to Endometriosis
Amy Schumer revealed that she had her uterus and appendix removed as she continues to combat endometriosis, the painful condition which has no cure.
In a video posted on Instagram, the 40-year-old comedian is seen lying on a hospital bed having undergone a hysterectomy over the weekend.
Speaking to her husband Chris Fischer who’s filming, Schumer said, “So, it’s the morning after my surgery for endometriosis and my uterus is out. The doctor found 30 spots of endometriosis that he removed. He removed my appendix because the endometriosis had attacked it.
She added, “There was a lot of blood in my uterus and I’m, you know, sore and I have some, like, gas pains.”
In addition to the clip, Schumer shared a picture of her posing with her hand on her hip in a hospital gown and blue latex gloves, captioning the post, “If you have really painful periods you may have #endometriosis.”
Padma Lakshmi, who has spoken about her own struggle with the condition, wrote: “Thank you so much for sharing your endo story. Over 200 million women worldwide suffer with this. Hope you feel better soon!”

The condition affects one in 10 women of reproductive age worldwide, forming tissue similar to the lining of the womb in other places, like the ovaries, fallopian tubes and intestines.
The main symptoms of endometriosis are menstrual irregularities and pain, which may be felt in the abdomen, during sex or when urinating.
Fellow endometriosis sufferer Lena Dunham also opted for a hysterectomy, and although it may help ease the pain, there is a chance it can return.
Schumer, who has a 2-year-old son, Gene David, has previously spoken about her battle with endometriosis. Per Yahoo! Schumer noted that her endometriosis caused complications while she gave birth to Gene in 2019.
She said, “I was throwing up through the whole first hour of my C-section. It’s supposed to take about an hour and a half or something but mine took over three hours because of my endometriosis.”
