A Former NFL Player Created A Sweet Film About A Black Father Doing His Daughter’s Hair
Former NFL player Matthew Cherry created a touching six-minute short titled Hair Love about a black father doing his daughter’s hair.
Cherry started a Kickstarter to raise funds to make the film, which is based on his book of the same name, as Fast Company reports.
Cherry who spent three seasons as an NFL wide receiver prior to becoming a filmmaker directed the film alongside Everett Downing Jr., and Bruce W. Smith (Creator, The Proud Family, Animator, The Princess and the Frog).
Peter Ramsey (Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse) and Frank Abney (Animator, Toy Story 4) executive produced the short which is centered around a father tackling styling his daughter’s hair when her mom isn’t present.
The film features HBO Insecure creator Issa Rae, who portrays the main character, Zuri’s mother.
Hair Love is a collaboration with Sony Pictures. When Cherry launched the Kickstarter campaign in 2017 his fundraising goal was $75,000. However, Cherry received strong support that led him to raise $300,000. Because of that, Hair Love is the most highly-funded short film campaign in Kickstarter history. Check it out below.
