Sophie Turner Reveals She Was Suicidal Over ‘Game of Thrones’ Criticism
Game of Thrones star Sophie Turner may seem like she has it all with a hit show and an engagement to Joe Jonas, but the actress recently revealed a very painful and emotional struggle with depression.
The actress recently revealed her struggle on Dr. Phil’s podcast, Phil in the Blanks. She talked about how the scrutiny over her body and her performance got to be too much for her emotionally.
“I was so in love with [working on Game of Thrones] … I couldn’t believe I was going to get paid for it,” she said. “Everything was incredible, it only started to go downhill I think when I started to hit puberty and really puberty at like 17 and my metabolism was slowing down massively and I was gaining weight and there was the social media scrutiny and everything and that was when it kind of hit me.”
For the next five or six years, Turner said she suffered from depression.
“I would just believe it,” she said of the online criticism. “I would say, ‘Yeah, I am spotty. I am fat. I am a bad actress.’ I would just believe it. I would get [the costume department] to tighten my corset a lot. I just got very, very self-conscious.”
Things got so bad that Turner even said she thought of suicide, although she reveals she doesn’t think she would have gone through with it.
She revealed that her relationship with Joe Jonas, whom she is set to marry this summer, also helped her see herself in a new light.
“I’m now with someone who makes me realize I do have some redeeming qualities I suppose,” she said.
Turner will star in the upcoming X-Men film, Dark Phoenix.
