Twitter’s Expanding Character Count Officially A Go
Twitter released a blog stating that after their research, they will be expanding to 280 characters.
According to Aliza Rosen’s report on Twitter’s blog:
“During the first few days of the test many people Tweeted the full 280 limit because it was new and novel, but soon after behavior normalized (more on this below). We saw when people needed to use more than 140 characters, they Tweeted more easily and more often. But importantly, people Tweeted below 140 most of the time and the brevity of Twitter remained.”
Judging by her tone in the overall blog, it sounds like some people were concerned that a ton of tweets at 280 characters would swamp the timeline, but most tweets that were in the conducted study came out to around 190 characters, which in comparison, a Twitter image or poll “usually take up more space than a 190 character Tweet.”
While this information is great and all, Rosen fails to give us the projected date as to when Twitter would release the characters, which still leaves us tapping our fingers and spelling with U’s instead of You’s, or utilizing apps like Stormcrow to tweet our unedited thoughts.
