Jill Abbott, Race Director, discussed the May 8th 44th Annual Point-to-Point, a festive day that has it all—steeplechase racing, pageantry, and fun for the entire family. This is the major fundraiser for the historic house museum and gardens, founded by Henry Francis du Pont. Held on the beautiful Winterthur grounds the track is a one-mile figure eight, with jumping gates and there is a $60,000 purse for winning owners. Admission includes four tickets and viewing is ‘picnic’ style, bring a blanket, chairs, food and beverages. If you’re not into tailgating, there will be plenty of food on site, or you can enjoy brunch in the Hunt Tent. She notes that you can come in casual clothes or dress for the ‘Derby’ – hats and spring attire with awards for ‘best of.’ There is also a competition for your picnic display. Beside the steeplechase, there will be an antique car exhibit of Bentleys and Rolls, a carriage parade and display and activities for kids, including the annual stick horse racing. You can also wager on the races in a ‘Bet the House’ raffle – onsite and online – with prizes drawn from the winning bets. This year’s event will take place on Mother’s Day with the added bonus, a Point-to-Point ticket is good for a return visit to the museum throughout the month!
