Corporal Grigori Lopez Garcia and Corporal Amanda Pierce of the New Castle County Division of Police discussed the department and their ongoing efforts to recruit a diverse, public-minded force who are interested in a challenging and rewarding career in law enforcement and that represents the community they serve. The agency has original jurisdiction of all communities in unincorporated New Castle County, Delaware, served by 400 officers. We talked about the job and the many opportunities within the specialized units, from criminal investigation, forensics and public relations to mounted police and K-9 units. They discussed the requirements for enlistment and the educational route through the Academy. We discussed their neighborhood outreach programming, helping build trust with the many different communities they serve. They are available to talk to groups, participate in festivals and events, visit schools and businesses. They offered ways to see them in action first-hand, too, through internships and official Ride-Alongs. Finally, they spoke of the many benefits of joining the department including pensions and career advancement.
