Jennifer Jensen, Communications Officer for the Delaware Office of Veterans Services discussed their office and the Delaware Commission of Veterans Affairs, working to provide assistance to Delaware’s veterans, their spouses and dependent children. From emergency grants that can help with rent or utilities, to working with the state legislature to make Delaware more Vet friendly for employment and residency issues. We discussed recent successes, including House Bill 214 which exempts 100% disabled vets from school taxes – thanks to funding that replaces the lost revenue – and Senate Bill 117 which designates ‘Purple Star’ schools, providing programming for the unique needs of military children. She spoke of networking opportunities between agencies and employers to help vets make Delaware their home after discharge and their office’s work to help vets reestablish their benefits and entitlements. Ms Jensen also discussed the vets who make up the commission and how the Vietnam generation are the backbone of their programing.
Finally, an invitation to buy tickets to this year’s Friends of Delaware Veterans Trust Fund Dinner, November 13th, a black-tie fundraiser to help support the emergency resources offered by the OVS.
