Mark Nardone, Editor of Delaware Today magazine, along with Heather Pletcher, Executive Administrative Assistant of Boys & Girls Clubs of Delaware, and Mary Fox, Executive Director of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Delaware discussed the upcoming Best of Delaware party, August 2nd at the Chase Center on the Waterfront. The annual event showcases the winners of the Delaware Today ‘Best of” list and and a portion of the proceeds benefit the two youth charities. Mark described his magazine, the articles and exposes, the reviews, the event coverage and special editions, including August’s Restaurant Guide, and the creation of the annual ‘Best’ list, using reader votes and editor reviews. The list includes the regions best restaurants and bars, fashion and home stores, beauty and hair services and more, everything that makes the area such a great place to live. Heather and Mary discussed the importance of fundraising for their organizations. Boys & Girls Clubs of Delaware offers before-, after- and out- of school programs for 30,000+ young people in grades K-12 at 43 locations across Delaware. Their programs aim to help their youth members build character, develop friendships and learn teamwork through diverse educational programs and social activities, including art and sports. Membership is just $15, thanks in part to donors and fundraising events. Big Brothers Big Sisters matches at-risk youths with caring, adult role models, offering them with stability and friendship, their participants are more likely to improve in school and in their relationships with family and friends, and are less likely to skip school or use illegal drugs or alcohol. Mary also seeks funding and – mentor volunteers, the waiting list far outnumbers the volunteer ‘Bigs.’
