David Morris, Executive Director of the American Heart and Stroke Association Delaware discussed cardiac arrest. Nearly 350,000 occur each year outside of a hospital setting, seven out of ten at home, and knowing what to do can save a life. We talked about the differences between a heart attack and a cardia arrest, a heart attack victim can be ambulatory, conscious and talking. This person does not need CPR! David describes the steps we can all take – no certification is needed to help. He also reminds us that you no longer are asked to perform mouth -to-mouth resuscitation for a non-drowning victim, and that Good Samaritan laws protect you from legal actions by the victim. He also reminds us to always make sure the area is safe before going to anyone’s aid, you don’t want to become the next victim! After securing the area check for responsiveness, if the victim is talking or awake, just call for help. If the victim is unresponsive call 911, preferably asking somebody to do it for you. Send someone else for an AED and start your compressions. He directs you interlock your hands and place your palm in the center of the victim’s chest. Begin compressions, 120 per minute, the same beat as the song Stayin’ Alive. David tells us, don’t be afraid of the AED, they explain themselves. The machine will not only direct you through the steps, it will also check for a pulse before discharging its shock. He also suggests tag-teaming the compressions.
David wants us to always remember, 911 in Delaware can direct you every step of the way, don’t be afraid to offer aid. We also discussed the research that shows women, people of low income, people of color and Hispanics are less likely to receive assistance in a cardiac emergency. He offers assistance for any community group who wants to learn more, and anyone who want more information about heart health to contact the American Heart and Stroke Association at HEART.org/Delaware
