Pam Cornforth, the President and CEO of the Ronald McDonald House of Delaware, discussed its history and future as a residence for families of seriously or chronically ill or injured children who’ve traveled to area hospitals for medical treatment. The Ronald McDonald Family Rooms offer respite at Bayhealth Medical Center, Christiana Care, and Nemours/Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children.
For a suggested donation of just $15 a night, families enjoy a private guest room and bath, phone with voice mail, and TV. All of the house is wheelchair accessible in case their child is staying with them for outpatient treatment. Families share a fitness center, four different playrooms, 5-station kitchen, library, media room, and outside playgrounds. Every evening volunteer meal groups provide a hot meal, and breakfast is provided on weekends. A manager is there 24/7 to assist the families.
Families are accepted by need and length of stay; for families requiring less accommodation RMDH will provide hotel rooms. At the Ronald McDonald Family Rooms families can take a break for TV, reading, a nap or a snack. Fundraising events are fun, plan on joining the 29th Annual 5K Run/Walk with the Blue Rocks at Frawley Stadium April 14th!
How to help? Pam asks for your time, talent and treasure. Volunteer your time, they need help with cleaning, greeting, manning the Family Rooms and working the fundraising events. If you’re a cook, help with meal preparation, office help is always appreciated. Donate – families are never turned away for lack of funds.
